8 things you must know as a ventriloquist

Ventriloquism is one of the most ancient forms of entertainment which in its contemporary presentation continues to captivate and entertain modern audiences throughout the world.

Ventriloquism is an illusion; a very enjoyable, harmless illusion. Everyone knows that a little puppet can’t talk by himself. When it is alone it is nothing more than pieces of fabric and wood. But, in your hands, smiling up at you with it’s bright painted smile, and looking all around tossing wise-cracks at the audience, it will be seen as a very cute and ALIVE personality. This is because you are lending the puppet your voice, your spirit, and your wit, Your vent partner will become one of your best friends...your faithful pal.

Magic and ventriloquism have similarities. Ventriloquism is to the ear what magic is to the eye. The illusion of magic is made possible because "the hand is quicker than the eye." Both art forms are made possible
through misdirection.

The human ear has difficulty judging accurately the direction of sound. Knowing this fact, the ventriloquist furthers the illusion with some act, word, or gesture that directs the attention of his audience to the place from which he wants them to believe the sound was produced. It’s all very convincing and believable to the listener and some will even argue that they actually heard the voice come from the puppet’s mouth! You, however, know the truth - the voice cannot be actually thrown to some point apart from yourself.

Ventriloquism has always been a mysterious and fascinating ART. History records the art being practiced centuries ago in the ancient temples and places of religious worship. Some ventriloquist historians feel the Old Testament account of the Witch of Endor involves the ancient practice of ventriloquism.

Most people think the ventriloquist has a throat or voice box that is capable of doing something that ordinary people are unable to do. While this is not true, it has certainly helped keep the secret of the art from being learned by more than just a select few people.

Like any other art or subject that requires study and practice for accomplishment, so does the art of ventriloquism. The student must have a very sincere desire to learn and dedication to the task. You will need to give these lessons and their instructions your focused thought and undivided attention. It is extremely important that you do the exercises as directed. This will be a team effort with you doing your part while we assist as needed to insure your success.

When the Ventriloquist holds the vent figure (dummy) on his knee or lap, or has placed it on a vent stand next to himself and makes it appear and sound as though the figure is alive, this is called "NEAR Ventriloquism." But if the ventriloquist is standing on one side of the stage and makes it sound as if the figure is calling from its suitcase which is sitting on the far opposite side of the stage, this is called "DISTANT Ventriloquism.

Guide

SCRIPT:

Setting: Somewhere in Asia where an elephant is passing by.

Boy: (enters stage running and yelling). An elephant! Everybody, come see it, it´s coming, it´s coming. Everybody come out, come and see the elephant… An elephant!

(the blind men enter stage walking slowly with their cranes).

Blind man 1: I don´t know how an elephant looks like.

Blind man 2: Me neither.

Blind man 3: Me neither.

Blind man 4: I would like to know how an elephant looks like.

Blind man 5: Let´s wait so we can touch it.

Blind man 6: We will touch it with our own hands. Our fingers are our eyes.

Guide: (enters with the elephant). Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, this big elephant needs to walk through here. Be careful.

Blind man 1: (walking) Good man, please let this poor blind men touch your elephant. We want to know how it looks like.

Guide: OK. Get near one by one. He´s not dangerous. Don´t be afraid.

Blind man 1: (touches the elephant´s body). Mmmm, I can see: The elephant is like a rough wall.

Blind man 2: (touches the elephan´s leg). No, you are wrong. The elephant is like a tree.

Blind man 3: That´s a lie, that´s a lie! My hands tell me clearly that the elephant is like a spear.

Blind man 4: You are completely wrong. I also touched it and I am sure that it´s like a hand fan, and my fingers don`t lie to me.

Blind man 5: Nobody lies to me. The elephant looks like a snake.

Blind man 6: None of you know how an elephant looks like! I think that the elephant looks like a rope to tie packages.

Blind man 1: How do you dare to insult me? I am sure that it looks like a wall.

Blind man 2: I am telling you that it looks like a tree.

Blind man 5: No, it´s like a snake.

Blind man 3: Snake? Not at all! I am sure it looks like a spear.

Blind man 4: It`s a lie. It looks like a hand fan.

Blind man 6: It´s a rope! It´s a rope!

(the blind men start fighting with each other. There´s great confusion and everybody is talking at the same time).

Blind man 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: No one will say that I am wrong… Take this! Ouch, ouch… but I am right…. It´s a rope… It´s a wall… It´s a spear… No, I am telling you that it´s a hand fan… A tree, it´s a tree… Who hit me? Ouch, my back!

Guide: Calm down, calm down! Be quiet! Listen… listen… I will explain everything.

(there`s silence in stage)

Blind Men 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 : Why? …Why?

Guide: (gets into the elephant) Because each of you only touched a part of the elephant. The one who touched the body thought it was a wall. The one who touched the leg thought it was a tree. The one who touched the tusk imagined a spear. The one who felt the ear tought it was a hand fan. The one who touched the trunk remembered the snake, and the shortest one, that only could touch the tail, was sure that the elephant was like a rope.

Blind man 5: Now I understand. Yes, that´s what happened and we all got angry.

Guide: You got so angry that you started fighting with each other.

Blind man 1: We behaved like fools.

Blind man 2: We were wrong.

Blind man 3: We got so furious.

Blind man 4: Because all of us thought we were right.

Blind man 5: But none was.

Blind man 6: Instead of trying to understand.

Guide: Of course, to know the truth we have to know every part.

Blind man 1: We thank you, and the elephant too, for teaching us that it´s better to agree with each other and try to know the truth. Now we know that reality is different depending on how we see it.

Blind man 2: Let´s be friends again.

Blind man 3: Let´s get to know the elephant.

(The blind men walk around the elephant touching it at the same time).

The End.

7 Great tips for a live puppet show

Hi there! Today I am going to give you some great tips I have learned from my experience about throwing a great live puppet show. Live shows are great, you have the flexibility of adjusting your content and length of your show and you have the option of communicating with your audience and responding to them.
Okay, lets get back to the "tips"and here are few tips I have used to improve my shows.
live puppets show

Memorize your script. That is a must, the worst thing you can do in a show is forget your lines and end up saying something you should never or read a script during your performance. Memorize the script well and you will be breathing life into your puppet.
Memorizing a script can be tricky at times. I usually create a bullet list of important things and this always works for me. It allows me in moving from one point to other without forgetting important lines I have to use.
At times a routine is still difficult even if I make bullet points out of it, in that case I rewrite it. Works for me, may be would go fine with you as well. Give it a try. Rewrite it and make it comfortable for yourself.

Always be mindful of your audience. I always rewrite and modify my routines to suit my audience. A good routine can be rewritten to suit any age group. Something funny for a preschooler might be boring and dull for the 5th or 6th grader and vice virsa.

I always try to turn my routines to real conversations. Do not perform your skit word to word, practice it as if it is a real conversation and engage your audience. Ask your audience to repeat your words, or ask them interesting questions.

Know your audience, each one of the crowd has a personality and is unique in his own way. Quickly identify their personality and you would be better positioned to get their attention.

Develop a personality for your puppet, ask yourself questions like How old is he?, Where is he from? What accent he has? his family, friends, birthday etc.

Make your transitions perfect. A good transition helps the audience move along with you and understand the message you are trying to convey.

Last but not the least, always remember, puppetry is an art that involves discipline, great stage presence, enthusiasm and perfect timing. Practice is the key to success. You can use these tips to enhance your performances, with a little extra degree of effort and hardwork you will soon become a pro :)

Good luck for your shows! :)

5 best tips for an awesome school assembly performance

Hi everyone!

Today I am going to tell you about how to have a great school assembly performance.

School assemblies are an effective way to communicate ideas and induce a learning spirit in children. They are also a great way to incorporate a learning aspect to an entertainment. School assemblies are great for performers because they give you great exposure. You know your audience and their age group before you go into perform and so you get a better chance of preparing and planning your show. For some performers it becomes a bit difficult to perform at school assemblies and today I would like to share my own personal experiences with you and how I make my school assembly performances a great success.

Here are 5 best tips that would help you have a great performance at school assembly.

  1. Get their attention, unless you have full attention of your audience you can not take them along on the fun journey and soon they would lose interest.
  2. Getting their attention is one thing, keeping it is another. As any parent, guardian, or teacher will tell you, children of all ages have short attention spans. The assembly should have content that appeals to that adrenaline-filled spirit in children. If it does, they'll be on the edge of their seats.
  3. Always be mindful of the time. You have limited amount of time, manage it purposefully and wisely. You must let your audience get the most out of it.
  4. Your performance must have a message at the end, no matter how engaged a student becomes, he or she must also be learning. This is paramount to any good assembly program. Make sure at the end children are going to learn something very useful and practical from your performance.
  5. Use TV shows, drama and magic tricks to entertain your audience and keep them focused.

How to write excellent jokes

Think of a time when you’ve made your friends laugh while just hanging out. Those laughs came from your specific shared context, which you used to make a clever observation, a cutting put-down, or something else that was funny. In this case, the premise—the setup—is woven into the fabric of ordinary life. Your hilarious quip (or whatever) was the punchline.
Lot of people have contacted me after my shows and have asked me about how to write good jokes. So I finally decided to reveal some of the tricks I normally use for writing the jokes.
Before going into the detailed discussion about how to write excellent jokes, first let us try to understand why people laugh. Because this is why we are trying to write jokes, to make people laugh!
The number one element that triggers human laughter is SURPRISE. It’s like magic, only with words. A magician surprises the audience when he does his trick. If there is no surprise, there is no trick. The formula for any magician is to have surprise. Without formulating surprise, you’re gonna have one hell of a boring act.
It’s the same with comedy. Once you understand this, you can do one of two things:

  • .      You can start to ramble and figure out how to surprise your audience
  • .      You can develop an understanding of the structures or “formulas” in comedy that create surprise for the audience, whenever you want.

So this brings us to the next question, how can we create surprise?  The simplest and easiest way to do so is to start your joke as a story, captivate your audience. Then makes them believe one thing and surprise them with something different. And that would be your punch line.
That was easy, wasn’t it? Now let me share few more tips about writing great jokes.

  • Think about an interesting topic. An easy target may be a current event, celebrity, or something well known to your audience.
  • Twist it from something serious to anything that is entertaining or even absurd.
  •  Use familiarity in your jokes. Build up your joke on something that is common and your audience is familiar with it
  • Exaggerate things but don’t overstress while doing so.
  • Always be brief with your jokes, keep them short, simple and easier to understand for your audience
  • Show the irony in your jokes and twist them to make them funny
  • Always keep your audience in mind, be watchful of their mood
  • Playing with the numbers and always remember that truth is funny.
  • Never laugh at your own jokes, you must stay serious while telling jokes, a nice and simple smile is enough.
